The Line I Keep
Self-respect is not believing I am better than anyone else. It is knowing there are places I should not have to abandon myself just to remain accepted.

Self-respect is often mistaken for pride.
But pride asks how we appear. Self-respect asks what we are willing to betray in ourselves to keep something, please someone, or avoid being left behind.
That difference matters.
There are moments when compromise is healthy. Relationships, work and family all require flexibility. We cannot expect life to bend around us.
But compromise stops being healthy when staying connected requires us to repeatedly ignore our own limits, values or dignity.
Self-respect does not mean walking away from every discomfort.
Sometimes it means staying, speaking clearly and allowing another person to be disappointed without immediately changing ourselves to make the tension disappear.
The difficult part is that choosing self-respect can still hurt.
We may lose approval, closeness or certainty.
But sometimes the cost of keeping our place becomes greater than the cost of leaving it.
Self-respect begins when we notice that difference.
