Endings have a way of changing how we remember what came before them.
Once something is over, it is easy to look backwards through the knowledge that it did not last. Affection can begin to feel less sincere, promises less meaningful, and tenderness almost foolish simply because we now know where the story ended.
But permanence and sincerity are not the same thing.
Something can have been genuine and still have been unable to survive. A relationship can contain real tenderness without being right for the future. Remembering that does not mean wishing for it back.
Nor does the emptiness left behind prove that something should have lasted.
Sometimes it is simply the outline of a place where something mattered for a while.
An ending decides what comes next. It does not get to rewrite everything that came before.
